STAX A-Z EXPO
Marc Janssen on Stax
By Jan Vollaard
”You could fly all the way to Memphis to see the Stax album covers hanging in the Stax Museum,” says Marc Janssen. ”But you might as well come to the 58th Mega Record Fair in Den Bosch, because you’ll see them all there.”
Master collector Marc Janssen showcases all the album covers from Stax, the soul label from Memphis that released music from Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T and the M.G.’s, Rufus & Carla Thomas, The Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes, and many more. Over three hundred albums were released on Stax in the sixties, seventies, and eighties. From the compilation album ”Stax: Treasured Hits from the South” from 1962 to more recent works from Shirley Brown and The Dramatics, they are all present in Janssen’s Soul & Funk Music Archives. Previously, he displayed the complete album collection of Motown to visitors of the record fair. Expect a wall filled with timeless Stax covers.
”My love for Stax started with The Bar-Kays. I used to play their records a lot. The cover featured that symbol, of a hand with a snapping finger. The legendary Stax logo. Later on, I got to know more artists on Stax. It took me a while to understand that Enterprise and Volt were also labels operating under the Stax umbrella. When I showcased the Motown expo at the fair, I honestly felt a bit embarrassed about it. I found Motown to be such a slick, commercial label. Stax was much rawer. It had so much more soul, in my opinion.
I have around three hundred Stax album covers, including the sublabels. My display of covers is arranged chronologically. It starts in 1961 at the top left and ends in 1986 at the bottom right. ’Green Onions’ by Booker T and the M.G.’s is the first album released on the actual Stax label. Before that, there was an album by The Mar-Keys: ’Last Night.’ Those are Stax recordings distributed by Atlantic. The same goes for ’Gee Whiz’ by Carla Thomas. It was released exactly a day later than ’Last Night.’ I find that to be a funny detail. I’ve met her father, Rufus Thomas, a few times. A very distinctive character. He told me that it was the DJs who made the music known. He was also a DJ himself in the early sixties.
’Otis Blue’ by Otis Redding is one of the most beautiful albums on Stax, in my opinion. ’Hot Buttered Soul’ by Isaac Hayes is another favorite. And there’s a lot of beautiful music on ’Gospel Truth,’ which is Stax’s sublabel specializing in gospel music. Joshie Jo Armstead is one of the best artists on there. There’s even comedy on Stax. I’ll be showcasing all those covers, including on sublabels like Hip and Party. Stax existed for much shorter time than Motown, so it’s quite remarkable that they released a total of 331 albums.
I often visit the southern United States. It’s more relaxed there than in the north, especially in terms of racial relations. In the music industry, there’s less fuss about the difference between white and black people. Stax reflected that, with a mix of musicians. Guitarist Steve Cropper and bassist Donald ’Duck’ Dunn could collaborate with the black singers they accompanied without any issues. Elvis recorded in the Stax studio, specifically because he found the studio space so special. He brought all the equipment he needed himself, in a truck outside the studio. Inside, there was no discrimination. A musician was valued for his talent, not his skin color.
There’s a clear difference between the period when Stax was in Memphis and later in Los Angeles. You can hear the difference between the early period, when the music was recorded on two tracks, and the later period when they started using multi-track studios. Artists on Stax generally had good soul voices. And there were excellent songwriters. Mack Rice, for example, and Mabel John, the sister of Little Willie John. Steve Cropper was important as a guitarist, but also as a co-composer for Otis Redding. I’ve met him a few times, and the funny thing is, he’s a very ordinary man. One of the funkiest guitarists in the world, but here in the Netherlands, you wouldn’t bat an eye if such a man worked in a factory at NedCar.
The Staple Singers were an important link between gospel and soul on Stax. Mavis Staples told me that her father, band leader Pops Staples, had a deep connection with Dr. Martin Luther King. The famous speech ’I have a dream’ by Doctor King was inspired by a song by The Staple Singers from the fifties. I find it fascinating to look for the origins of the music; the purest piece of inspiration. Stax is a label that has been fundamental to a lot of authentic music.
Rare records on Stax are those of the group 24 Carat Black and ’Walk Right In’ by Gus Cannon, one of the first records on the label. Before you could find those albums online, I looked in the magazine Goldmine and searched for people in America who sold records. Then I would write a letter with a list of what I was looking for and travel to Baltimore to buy soul and funk records. Sometimes at studios, sometimes at artists’ homes, and sometimes from private individuals. You ended up in the craziest places. Usually, you were warmly welcomed. You could buy the rarest records for a hundred dollars. I did that a lot in the nineties. That’s how I built my collection. I have everything on Stax in the original pressing.
Stax also released records by white artists. Big Star, a very good group that recorded at Ardent Studio. Delaney and Bonnie with the album ’Home,’ also on Stax. Estelle Axton, one of the two founders, said this about the presence of both black and white artists on Stax: ’We didn’t see color. We only saw quality.’ The quality of the music was always the primary consideration for why an artist was released on Stax. That's why there are so many great records on the label.”
