”You could fly all the way to Memphis to see the Stax album covers hanging in the Stax Museum,” says Marc Janssen. ”But you might as well come to the 58th Mega Record Fair in Den Bosch, because you’ll see them all there.”
Master collector Marc Janssen showcases all the album covers from Stax, the soul label from Memphis that released music from Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T and the M.G.’s, Rufus & Carla Thomas, The Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes, and many more. Over three hundred albums were released on Stax in the sixties, seventies, and eighties. From the compilation album ”Stax: Treasured Hits from the South” from 1962 to more recent works from Shirley Brown and The Dramatics, they are all present in Janssen’s Soul & Funk Music Archives. Previously, he displayed the complete album collection of Motown to visitors of the record fair. Expect a wall filled with timeless Stax covers.
Exclusive and for the first time in The Netherlands
RecordPlanet has gained unique access to Alexander Johansson’s KISS private collection. This private collection is considered one of the largest KISS collections in Scandinavia, providing an exclusive insight into the world of KISS. Alexander debuted with a KISS-related exhibition in Stockholm in 2004, followed by 29 exhibitions spread across Sweden.
For the first time and exclusively on display during the Mega Record & CD Fair. The exhibition impressively showcases how KISS has inspired an entire generation and is recognized as one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Enjoyable for everyone, both for the general music enthusiast and the seasoned KISS connoisseur.
The exhibition brings together unique items, including original costumes, gold records, photos, tour posters, guitars, videos, album artwork, fan memorabilia, interactive elements and even a sampler from the late ’90s featuring the infamous firehouse siren from the song ’Firehouse’ plus much more. Alexander’s favorite piece in the exhibition is undoubtedly Paul Stanley’s black spandex suit from the Rock ’n’ Roll Over tour of 1976/1977.
Who has never, in their wildest dreams, imagined hanging the works of Picasso, Dali, Warhol, Banksy, or Keith Haring in their living room? If you also appreciate music, your dream can come true through the album covers illustrated by hundreds of artists: Magritte, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, but also Roy Lichtenstein, Norman Rockwell or Edward Hopper.
Whether borrowed works or commissioned by artists, these album covers are now part of the cultural domain. The ’Banana cover’ of Velvet now competes with the ’Venus de Milo’ and the ’Zip cover’ of Sticky Fingers shamelessly rubs shoulders with ’The Garden of Earthly Delights’ by Hieronymus Bosch.
Question: Would Sgt. Pepper be the most famous album of all time today without the design by Peter Blake? Probably not. On the other hand, would King Crimson’s first album have acquired its cult status without Barry Godber’s haunting portrait?
It is through a maelstrom of artistic works that Manuel Decker guides us throughout his fourth work, ’Record Art Covers’. Several hundred painted and illustrated covers adorn the chapters dedicated to classical, abstract, Pop Art, but also to the greatest poster artists (Toulouse-Lautrec / Alfons Mucha ....).
The music reproduced on a vinyl record then becomes the pretext to collect, admire, and reproduce in your living room the greatest museum in the world. Now, return to your record collection.... and follow the guide.
On the occasion of the 58th Mega Record Fair, Manuel Decker will present (and sign) his book ’Record Art Covers’ as well as an exhibition of the most iconic artistic record covers.
This year CHARLY celebrates its 50th anniversary as one of Britain’s leading independent reissue labels. Charly has always been innovative in recognising the value and marketability of back catalogue popular music - much of which had previously been overlooked by both major record companies and record buyers alike.
Charly brings Ronnie Leatherman from ’The 13th Floor Elevators’.
International Artists Presents - Charly Records: Ronnie Leatherman & his friends - Old School
First solo album by Ronnie Leatherman - bassist in the classic line-up of The 13th Floor Elevators - who had the distinction of playing on all three of the band’s studio albums.
Ronnie released his first single in June 1965 as Max & the Penetrators: ’Prayin’ Til Then / Kurl’ and apart from lead singer Roky Erickson, he is the only former member of the 13th Floor Elevators to release a solo album.
The tracks featured on Ronnie’s solo album feature many friends from his career, most significantly Paul Tennison (RIP 2023) who also briefly performed with the Elevators, Terry Penny (RIP) who was part of several power trios with Bobby Rector who performed under many names. The song ’Coming Day’ incidentally was written in 1968 but not submitted for Bull Of The Woods.

In ’EL PEA, the Magic of the Label Compilation’ music journalist Jan Vollaard delves into record bins and bargain basements to make an inventory of all the beautiful pop, soul, rock, hip-0hop and jazz that is waiting for a new owner for next to nothing. The search for the soul of vinyl leads from dusty stereo test records to beat music and techno. Along the way there is attention to disco, British folk, French chanson and music from the African continent. Via ska and reggae, metal and punk, hip hop and house we arrive at the indie pop of today. Labels such as Island, Blue Note, Stiff and Def Jam determined the course of pop history. Taken together, the stories about all those colorful label compilations form an alternative history of pop music.
Book presentation and DJ set: Saturday April 13 at 12:30 on stage. The book can be purchased in hall 2 at Stand 347 (next to the stage) where the most beautiful covers from the book are exhibited. The first 50 buyers of the book will receive a voucher with which they can select a free LP from the El Pea collection compiled by Jan Vollaard.

Their music? Raw and punchy alternative rock. It reflects a struggle to understand everything. You hear frustration in the crashes of the drums, torment in the growls of the guitars and entrapment in the lyrics. Their debut album ’Nothing Ever Happens Around Here’ was released on October 27, 2023 on vinyl, CD and streamers. It received favorable reviews.
Live on stage Saturday April 13 in hall 2.
